Abstract

1304425 Electro-deposition of gold and gold alloys ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 2 July 1970 [3 July 1969] 32277/70 Heading C7B In a method of electro-depositing gold or gold alloy from an acidic or neutral bath containing a water-soluble complex gold salt, either (a) the bath is replenished by addition of a complex gold salt other than a salt of an alkali metal; or (b) the bath is replenished with an alkali metal complex gold salt, and the bath is contacted with an ammoniated cation exchange resin to replace alkali metal ions by ammonium ions, thereby preventing a rise in concentration of alkali metal ions in the bath. The bath may be a cyanide or a sulphite bath. Also present to act as buffers and improve conductivity may be phosphates, sulphamates, borates, tartrates, citrates, acetates or formates. The bath may also contain Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe, As or Co; which metals may or may not codeposit with the gold. As shown the plating bath is connected via conduit 6, pump 7 and valve 13 with column 9 containing cation exchange resin 10 e.g. sulphonated polystyrene cation exchange resin in ammoniated form. The anode may be of platinized titanium. The cathode may be formed by a rotating cylinder.
