Abstract

1349796 Electroplating with gold SEL-REX CORP 16 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 28117/71 Heading C7B Gold is electroplated from a solution having a ph of at least 6À5 and comprising a goldcyanide complex and 1-140 mg of thallium per litre of plating solution. The Au can be deposited without co-deposition of the Tl. The Au may be provided by KAu(CN) 2 or NaAu(CN) 2 . Suitable sources of T1 are thallous and thallic salts such as the sulphides, chlorides nitrates and fluosilicates. The pH may be adjusted by adding HCl, HBr, H 3 PO 4 or organic acids such as formic, citric, acetic, tartaric or gluconic acids. These may be employed as partially neutralized materials using reactants such as NH 4 , Na or K hydroxides or (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 . The solution may contain a conducting salt which may also act as a buffering material. E.g. it may contain sulphate, sulphamate, formate, acetate, citrate, lactate, tartrate, fluoborate, borate or phosphate ions provided by a metal salt. The electroplating may be at a current density of 1-200 amps/sq.ft. The temperature of operation may be 100-180‹ F.
