Abstract

1,232,193. Boots &c. E. G. HENKEL [trading as EUGEN G. HENKEL MASCHINENFABRIK] and COMPO INDUSTRIES Inc. 8 Jan., 1969 [9 Jan., 1968], No. 1242/69. Heading A3B. A pincer for gripping the edge of a boot or shoe upper, during lasting, consists of a pincer head adapted to grip the upper, a carrier mountable on a lasting machine and a pivotal connection between the carrier and pincer head permitting the pincer head to pivot with respect to the carrier in three mutually perpendicular planes. As described the pincer head is connected to the carrier by a ball joint consisting of a ball 22 and a ball cage having two parts 20, 21 connected together by a screwthread, the part 21 being rotatable by a handle 24 to lock the ball and thus the pincer head in any selected position. The pincer head has a fixed jaw 37 on a slide 28 and a movable jaw 38 which is operated by a piston 39. The slide 28 can be moved along guides 30 by a piston 34 to lay the lasting margin under the insole. The carrier base 4 is mounted in the lasting machine by a pin 5 which can be moved along a longitudinal slot (not shown) in the machine frame. The base 4 carries a slide 7 which can be adjusted transversely of the shoe by a screw 8. The ball cage 20 is carried by a rod 16 which can slide in a bore 15 in the slide 7 and can be adjusted heightwise by a threaded collar 19.
