Abstract

1369635 Boots, &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 22 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 49153/71 Addition to 1310917 Heading A3B The shoe bottom roughing machine of Specification 1310917 which includes a forepart template portion Tl for guiding the roughing tools (not shown) in a "toe to breast-line" roughing operation, is modified by the addition of a heel template portion T2 to allow an "allround" roughing operation to be performed, both template portions T1, T2 being adjustable in width and being movable relative to each other to vary the length of the template assembly T so that a single template assembly T can be used for a range of shoe sizes in a given style of shoe. The machine of the parent Specfiication is further modified by providing a retractable hold-down member (not shown) of the type described in Specification 1,285,559 to allow an "all round" roughing operation to be performed. The heel template portion T2 consists of two sections 154, 155 which are pivoted to the template holder 130 by pin 175 and which are urged together by spring 161 until inner edges 158, 159 of the sections engage a stud 174. The inner edges 158, 159 form a wedge shaped opening. The stud 174 can be moved lengthwise by a piston and cylinder (not shown) to vary the width of the heel portion T2. The forepart template portion T2 consists of two sections 152, 153 which are pivoted at 151 to a baseplate 150 which can move lengthwise of the template holder 130. A spring 160 urges the inner edges 156, 157 of the sections 152, 153 into contact with a stud 162 fixed to the template holder 130. The inner edges 156, 157 form a wedge shaped opening. Thus movement of the base plate 150 together with the sections 152, 153 in a lengthwise direction varies the width of the forepart section T1 The base plate 150 and sections 152, 153 are moved lengthwise by the stud 174 (which varies the width of the heel portion T2) until the base plate 150 contacts a stop member 184 whose position is determined by the position of the toe support (not shown) and thus by the size of the shoe. Movement of the stud 174 therefore moves the toe portion T1 lengthwise according to the size of the shoe and also adjusts the width of both portions T1 and T2 according to the size of the shoe.
