A lasting machine includes a pair of shank wipers having wiping surfaces 53 which can be adjusted in curvature to suit different styles of shoes, each wiper consisting of a plurality of wiper members 38 pivoted on supports 40 which are carried by a common pivot 41, the supports 40 having slots 43 through which is passed securing means to secure the supports 40 together with the wiper members 38 in their adjusted positions. As described the wipers are incorporated in a lasting machine of the type described in specification No. 1,087,975. Each wiper member 38, except the first wiper member 38, is pivoted at 65 to a double armed support 40 and all the supports 40 and the first wiper member 38 are pivoted to a common pivot pin 41 which is carried by an arm 42. The arm 42 also carries a bolt 44 with nut 45 which passes through slots 43 in the supports and which is used to secure the supports 40 and thus the wiper elements 38 in their adjusted position. The arm 42 is pivoted at 46 to one arm 47 of a two armed lever 48, the angular position of the arm 42 being adjusted by screw 51. The lever 48 is carried by the slide 30 which carries the ball wipers 28 and is urged heightwise by a piston and cylinder device (not shown) which exerts light pressure during closing movement of the wipers and heavy bedding pressure when the wipers are fully closed.
