1297122 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 2 Dec 1969 [3 Dec 1968] 58686/69 Heading A3B A lasting machine includes a shoe support, means for tensioning the upper over the last, and rotary wipers which operate progressively along the sides of the shoes, the rotary wipers being positioned widthwise automatically as they move lengthwise in the machine. As described the rotary wipers are incorporated in a conventional toe and heel bed lasting machine. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 2) each wiper 11, 12 consists of a wheel having a resilient toothed periphery, the wheels. 11, 12 being mounted on shafts 21, 22 which can move heightwise in arms 58, 59. Springs 29, 39 urge the wipers 11, 12 into contact with the lasting margins 9, 10. The arms 58, 59 are pivoted on shafts 63, 64 fixed to slides 65, 66 which are moved lengthwise in the machine. As the slides 65, 66 are moved lengthwise the wipers 11, 12 are guided along the lasting margins 9, 10 by a template 57, the ends 60, 61 of the arms 58, 59 being urged into contact with the template 57 by a spring 62. The toothed wheels may be replaced by wheels (not shown) having spring loaded wiper members around their periphery. In a modification (not shown) the wipers 11, 12 are mounted in a machine of the type described in Specification No. 1277302 which incorporates a wire brush for trimming the forepart and toe region of the lasting margin and the same template is used to guide the wire brush and the wipers 11, 12. In a second embodiment (Fig. 10) the wipers consist of rolls 101 having a helically ribbed surface. The roll which acts along the inside of the shoe is mounted on a shaft 104 which can be rotated in a block 105 by a lever 106, link 107 and piston and cylinder 109 so that the roll acts radially with respect to the lasting margin. The roll at the outside is fixed to the block 105. Each block 105 is pivoted by pin 112 to carrier arm 111 so that the roll 101 can tilt to follow the contour of the shoe, the roll being urged towards a central position by leaf spring 113. Each arm can swing heightwise about pin 115 and transversely about shaft 117, the wipers being guided by a follower arm 121, 125 engaging a template 122. Each of the embodiments may incorporate an adhesive applying nozzle (not shown) or a heater foot (not shown) for activating adhesive previously applied to the insole. The nozzle or foot is positioned slightly in advance of the wipers.
