1443274 Boots etc BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 21 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973] 06287/74 Heading A3B A machine for lasting the forepart, joint and waist regions of a shoe includes shoe supporting means (not shown), a nozzle 7 for applying a stripe 8 of adhesive around the edges of the forepart and joint regions of the insole 1, a pair of joint wipers 10, 11, a pair of rotary wiping devices 18, 19 at opposite sides of the shoe which move heelwardly from the joint region and across the waist region, and a pair of wiper plates 3, 4 which wipe the lasting margins in the forepart and extend sufficiently for heelwardly to overlap the portions of the upper wiped inwardly at the joint region by the rotary wiping devices 18, 19. In operation the stripe 8 of adhesive is first applied to the edge of the forepart and joint regions of the insole 1 by a single nozzle 7 as shown in Fig. 1 or by a pair of nozzles. The joint wipers 10, 11, which consist of rods with flattened upper engaging faces, are then advanced and retracted by piston and cylinder devices 12, 13 to wipe the joint region of the lasting margin as shown in Fig. 2. The rotary wiping devices 18, 19 (Fig. 4), which consist of helically ribbed frusto-conical rollers, are then moved from the joint region heelwardly across the waist region, adhesive being applied to the edges of the insole 1 by nozzles 24, 25. The forepart wipers 3, 4 then advance and close about pivot 5 to wipe the forepart of the shoe, the wiping action overlapping the joint region wiped by the rollers 18, 19.
