Abstract

1341967 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 6 May 1971 [7 May 1970] 21970/70 Heading A3B A machine for lasting the forepart of a shoe up to and including the joint region includes a shoe support 2, grippers 4, 6, 8 for tensioning the upper about the last, a wiper arrangement which is moved from an initially retracted position to an operative position adjacent the shoe, and a toe band 40 for clamping the tensioned upper against the last, the toe band 40 being mounted for movement forwardly with respect to the wiper arrangement, prior to the wiper arrangement reaching its operative position, so that the toe band 40 can be applied to the shoe to enable the upper to be released by at least the grippers 4 and 6 during the advancing movement of the wiper arrangement to its operative position. Preferably the wiper arrangement includes toe wipers 30 and joint wipers 32 and the machine also includes forepart clamps 98 for pressing the ends of the toe band 40 against the upper and joint clamps 110 for clamping the upper in the joint region. The shoe support 2 and associated adhesive applying means 16, 20 are of a well known type and the grippers 4, 6, 8 are of the type described in Specification 1010149. The wiper 30, 32, clamps 98, 110 and toe band 40 are all carried by a wiper head 36 which can move along guideways (not shown) in the machine frame between a retracted position as shown and an operative position adjacent the shoe. The toe band 40 is connected by links 44 to a cross-bar 48 mounted on a slide 52 which can move along guideways 54 in the wiper head 36. The slide 52 and toe band 40 are advanced relative to the wiper head by pistons 66 and cylinders 68 while the wiper head is in its retracted position. As the wiper head 36 is advanced the toe band 40 engages the upper so that the grippers 4, 6 (and possibly also 8) can release the upper. Thus the upper is held in tensioned condition by the toe band 40 before the wipers reach their operative positions. When the wiper head 36 reaches its operative position the forepart clamps 98 are advanced by piston and cylinders 86 to press the ends of the toe band 40 against the upper and the joint clamps 110 are advanced by piston and cylinders 118 to clamp the joint regions of the upper against the last. The toe wipers 30, which are operated as described in Specification No. 1235096, are then advanced until they just contact the upper and adhesive is applied by the device 16, 20. The adhesive applying means 16, 20 is then lowered and the toe wipers complete their inwiping movement. A thin wiper plate (not shown) bridges the gap between the opening rear edges of the toe wipers 30. The joint wipers 32, which are carried by slides 140, are then advanced by piston and cylinders 162 acting via bell-cranks 150, 152 and links 146 to complete the wiping operation. The insole rest 11 is then retracted so that a toe rest (not shown) applies bedding pressure against the wipers 30, 32. After a dwell period the various parts then return to their initial positions.
