Abstract
1,235,960. Boots &c. H. DAUM. 15 Oct., 1969 [15 Oct., 1968; 31 Dec., 1968], No. 50659/69. Heading A3B. A method of lasting includes the steps of placing an upper loosely over a last 5 having marks where the longitudinal axis XY-L and transverse axis XY-W cross the edge of the last sole, bringing four corresponding marks on the upper into registry with those on the last, clamping or gripping the upper at least at the four marks, successively stretching the upper longitudinally and laterally about the last, laying the last margin over the edge of an insole on the last bottom and attaching the lasting margin to the insole. The axes XY-L and XY-W are chosen so that the lasts in a range of sizes each present a similar outline to the side lasting devices (see Fig. 3). Apparatus for performing the method includes conventional toe and heel lasting assemblies 28, 29 and side lasting assemblies each consisting of a series of lasting fingers 1. The fingers 1 are mounted on a support plate 2 having an upper surface corresponding to the profile of the last (Fig. 2). The fingers 1 and plate 2 are carried in a housing 3 which is reciprocated by jack 6. Each finger 1 carries a spring loaded hook 21 which grips the lasting margin so that as the housing 3 is moved inwardly by jack 6 the upper is tensioned and laid across the insole by the ends 7 of the fingers 1 where it is attached by adhesive. The fingers 1 are arranged so that they follow the outline of the last bottom (Fig. 3) by a pair of cam surfaces. The rear edge of slide 9, which is moved into operative position by jack 11, engages extensions 1<SP>1</SP> of the fingers 1 to arrange the fingers for the outside edge of the last bottom and the rear surface 12 of plate 2 arranges the fingers for the inside edge of the last bottom. The fingers 1 are held in their adjusted positions by an elastic pad 15 which is clamped against the fingers 1 by a jack 18. In a modification (not shown) the fingers 1 can be adjusted to allow for the difference in profile between the inner and outside edges of the last.
