1335621 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 13 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1565/71 Heading A3B A method of lasting in which the insole I is not tacked or otherwise secured to the last L includes the steps of pulling the upper U toewardly about the last L so that the lasting margin forms a pocket 36 around the heel end of the last, placing an insole I on the last bottom with its heel end nested within the pocket 36, registering the toe end of the insole with the toe end of the last, clamping the insole against the heel end of the last bottom and then lasting the heel end of the upper. The toe end of the insole I is registered with the toe end of the last L by applying a flexible band 40 around the toe end of the last L to form a pocket 80 and placing the toe end of the insole I in the pocket 80. A lasting machine for performing these operations is of the type described in Specification 1,034,662 but having upper tensioning means 18 and a gauge mechanism 38. The upper tensioning means includes a two pairs of grippers 18 which are each closed by piston and cylinders 20 and which are carried by bracket 22. The bracket 22 is mounted on a parallelogram linkage 24, one link of which is formed as a bell-crank 26 and is connected to the piston rod 30 of cylinder 32. Operation of the cylinder 32 causes the bracket to be swung toewardly and upwardly, thus tensioning the upper U about the last L. The gauge mechanism 38 includes the flexible band 40 which is carried by arms 44 pivoted on block 48 and urged together by spring 50. The block 48 is pivoted to a slide 54 which is connected to piston rod 68 by a double armed lever 62, 66. A lug 72 on the block 48 has a pin 74 which rides in cam slot 76 so that when cylinder 70 is operated the band 40 is moved towards the toe of the last and is swung downwardly at the same time to form the pocket 80. When the insole I is located on the last within the pockets 36, 80 the last support 10 is raised to clamp the insole against the last by means of hold down 82. The hold-down 82 has a movable foot portion 86 which allows the insole to move with the last during the lasting operations. The heel end is then lasted as described in the abovementioned Specification.
