Abstract

1310917 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 1 June 1970 [2 June 1969] 26266/70 Heading A3B In a shoe bottom roughing machine of the type in which a lasted shoe S is moved beneath a pair of rotary roughing tools 14, 16 which operate progressively along opposite sides of the shoe bottom the tools 14, 15 are guided transversely of the shoe by a template assembly T which, when a shoe is placed in the machine, is (a) automatically oriented (e.g. by turning through 180‹) according to whether the shoe is a left or right shoe, (b) moved lengthwise in the machine according to the size of the shoe and (c) formed of two parts which are adjusted widthwise to vary the width of the template according to the size of the shoe. A single template T can thus be used for a range of shoe sizes in a given style of shoe. As described a shoe support including the template assembly T is incorporated in a roughing machine of the type described in Specification No. 1234404. In use a lasted upper S is placed in the machine with its heel end against a heel abutment 52 (Fig. 1) and is moved uwpardly against a heel support 50 which tilts slightly to actuate valve V1 which starts the machine cycle. A toe supporting block 102 is then moved towards the shoe S by a piston and cylinder C4, the toe of the shoe riding up along an inclined groove 106 in the block 102 until the toe contacts a toe abutment 120. When the toe contacts the abutment 120 it blocks an orifice in the pneumatic control circuit and causes the toe block to be locked in position by a pawl 206 (operated by cylinder C8) engaging a ratchet 204 on piston rod 108. Side clamps 56 are then operated by a piston and cylinder C3 and the shoe is clamped against the heel support by clamping plate 72 operated by piston and cylinder C2 via bell crank 70. The toe abutment 120 is then moved to its retracted position (shown dotted) by piston and cylinder C5. The shoe is then fully clamped and the machine performs its roughing operation. The template assembly T is mounted on a carrier 130 having shafts 122, 124 journalled in frame members 32, 34. The shaft 124 carries a pinion 136 which meshes with a rack 138 which can be moved to rotate the template through 180‹ by a piston and cylinder C6. The shaft 122 carries cams 210, 212 which operate sensing valves S3, S4 depending on whether the template is set for a left or right shoe. The heel abutment 52 is pivotally mounted and operates sensing valve S1 and S2 (not shown) depending on whether the shoe is a left or a right. The sensing valves S1, S2, S3 and S4 act in conjunction to operate cylinder 66 to rotate the template through 180‹ if the template is initially set for the wrong shoe. The template assembly T can be moved lengthwise by a piston and cylinder C7 against a stop 184 which is moved by lever arrangement 192 a proportion of the distance moved by the toe block 102. Thus the template T is automatically adjusted lengthwise of the machine according to the size of the shoe. The template T consists of two parts 152, 254 having inclined surfaces 156, 158 which engage a stud 162 fixed to the carrier 130. As the template is moved lengthwise the surfaces 156, 158 and stud 162 act to vary the separation of the parts 152 and 154 and thus adjust the overall width of the template according to the size of the shoe.
