Abstract

1,146,285. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. 6 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 14672/65. Heading A3B. A machine for lasting heel seat portions of shoes comprises a jack (1), Fig. 1 not shown, including a last-supporting post (14) and an adjustable last pin (2) as described in Specification 1,087,224, a pair of wipers 20 advanced and moved towards each other by a slide 24, Fig. 3, to wipe adhesive-covered edges of a shoe upper supported on the last over a similarly supported insole (neither shown), a hold down member 18 which contacts the insole prior to the wiping action and a heel band 48 which is clamped around the heel portion of the upper by a system of compensating levers. The machine is pneumatically operated by means of a treadle-operated valve. In use, initial depression of the treadle actuates a piston and cylinder (8) to move the jack rearwardly until an abutment (80) on the jack engages a microswitch (82) which operates a valve reducing air pressure to the piston and cylinder (8) and supplying air at this lower pressure to a diaphragm motor (M) to raise the jack (1) as it completes its rearward movement to bring the heel against the rearward portion of the heel band with the heel seat portion of the insole lightly pressing against the hold down member 18. The member 18 is vertically adjustable by means of a screw arrangement 34 through which it is mounted on an arm 36 of a three armed lever pivoted on the machine at (38). Each of the other arms 40, 42 of the lever carries a cam roll 44 which engages a cam surface 46 on the slide 24, so that whilst the slide is in its rearward position the hold down member remains in its adjusted position contacting the insole but when the machine operator depresses the treadle further and actuates first the piston and cylinder (8) and a piston and cylinder 62 for closing the heel band 48 and clamping it around the heel portion of the upper and subsequently a piston and cylinder (not shown) for moving the wiper actuating slide (24) forward at a certain point in its forward movement, the rolls ride down off the cam surface and thus raise the member 18 out of the path of the wipers 20. Supported on the upper face of hinger wiper carrier plates 22 are two pairs of co-axial rolls 26, the lower rolls engaging in slots 28 in a cam plate 32 and the upper rolls in the slots 30 in the slide 24. As the slide 24 is advanced movement of the rolls along slots 28 causes the carrier plates 22 to advance and swing inwardly to wiping position.
