Abstract

1,043,863. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. (UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION). May 17, 1963 [May 18, 1962], No. 19187/62. Heading A3B. A machine for shaping heel end portions of shoe uppers off the last comprises a plate having a peripheral contour corresponding to the heel end of an insole; a support for the plate and members arranged on opposite sides of the plate defining a cross-sectional contour heightwise of a shoe upper supported on the plate. As described the above features are incorporated in a heel seat lasting machine of the type described in Specifications 473,129 and 473,197. The plate 40 (Fig. 8) is mounted on a support 48 carried by a jack 32 and has resiliently mounted pins 54 to position the insole. The plate also carries an inner form 68 (Fig. 5, not shown) for shaping the region of the back line of the upper, the angle between the form 68 and the plate 40 being adjusted by a knurled nut 74 and a screw 78. The cross-sectional contour of the upper is defined by two members 82 (Fig. 8) which are pivotally mounted on the support 48 and which are urged into notches in the plate 40 by a spring 88. The members 82 form the inner jaws of grippers which have outer jaws 92 which are closed by piston and cylinders 100 to clamp the upper in position before the jack 32 is moved from its work receiving position as shown in Fig. 5 to its operative position. The heel band 202 (Fig. 13 not shown) is clamped against the heel end of an upper by a steel band 246 which applies pressure to the heel band 202 through a resilient spacer 204. The heel band is closed about the upper by means of a piston and cylinder 260 via double armed levers 252, 254 and links 250. In operation the operator places an upper (complete with lining and stiffener) and insole on the plate 40 with the jack 32 in its work receiving position (Fig. 5) and depresses a treadle (not shown) to operate the grippers 92 and clamp the upper in position. Further depression of the treadle causes the jack 32 to move from its work receiving position to its operative position and to move heightwise until the insole contacts a hold-down member 174 (Fig. 3 not shown). The heel band is closed about the upper by operation of a hand lever (not shown). The machine then operates as described in Specification 473,197 to wipe the lasting margin, apply bedding pressure against the wipers, tack the lasting margin to the insole and then return the various parts to their initial position.
