Abstract

1,031,681. Shoe upper conforming machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Jan. 3, 1963 [Jan. 5, 1962], No. 335/63. Heading A3B. A shoe upper conforming machine comprising a clamp holding the toe-end of a lasted shoe with its insole against a shoe rest whilst toe-embracing wipers first upwipe then inwipe, e.g. of the type described in Specification 721,758, is provided with the additional feature of supplementary toe wiping means e.g. a flexible toe band of polytetrafuorethylene, which is spring-supported and acts directly behind the toe-embracing wipers during their upwiping movement. The toe band 40, Figs. 1 and 5, is riveted to a flexible steel band 44 having guide pins 80 which are surrounded by compression springs 83 and project through openings 82 in a supporting frame 76 having flanges 78 on which the band 44 rests. Frame 76 by means of a system of flanges, nuts, pins, springs (compression), nuts and Cron member, 74, 72, 68, 64, 70, 66, 62, 60, respectively is spring mounted to the lower toe rest member 52 of a toe last 12 for the shoe which can be raised by a mechanism similar to that described in Specification 520,794. By means of its spring mounting the wiping edge 42 of the toe band 40, which rises with the shoe rest 12 as an automatic cycle of operations is initiated by the depression of a treadle (not shown) commences, can ultimately expand to follow the contour of the toe by compression of the springs 83. Abutment flanges 84 associated with the toe band 40 however first engage the undersides of the wipers 16 and prevent interference with these as they advance and close to the position shown in Fig. 7. As the toe rest 12 rises further to firmly clamp the shoe the springs 70 are compressed. The wiper head 30 and retarder 18 now rise and as the wipers 16 upwipe so also does the toe band edge 42, pushed up by the springs 70. As described in Specification 721,758 the wipers 16 inwipe and move down to press the upper margin against a previously adhesive-coated insole. All component parts then return to their original positions.
