Abstract
1346314 Boots &c J S KAMBORIAN 27 Aug 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 40344/71 Heading A3B A shoe is, lasted in a toe lasting machine 10 and then in a heel seat lasting machine, the two lasting machines having a common control mechanism which automatically positions the toe rest of the heel seat lasting machine according to the length of the shoe as measured in the toe lasting machine 10 by the engagement of the heel clamp with the heel end of the shoe. The toe lasting machine 10 (Figs. 1, 4) is similar to that described in Specification No. 1,171,090 and includes a heel clamp 58 mounted on a cross-piece 46 at the ends of two rods 40 which can slide in bearings in the machine frame. The heel clamp 58 is moved from a starting position into engagement with the heel end of the shoe by an air motor (not shown) and when a pad 68 on the heel clamp 58 contacts the shoe a valve 74 is operated to lock the heel clamp in position. The heel seat lasting machine (Fig. 13) is of the type described in Specification 1,346,313, and includes a column 184 carrying a toe rest (not shown). The column 184 is carried by a slide 168 which can be moved lengthwise of the shoe by a screw 170 which is rotated by electric motor 182 via sprockets 174, 178 and chain 180. A rack 80 (Fig. 1) is fixed to the heel clamp support 46 of the toe lasting machine 10, and the movement of the heel clamp 58 from its starting position to its position in engagement with the shoe is transmitted by the rack 80, pinion 82 and shafts 84, 86, 88 to a control mechanism (Fig. 8). The shaft 88 is connected to a gear 90 which is in mesh with a gear 114 having a cam 120 on its upper surface. Thus the cam 120 is rotated by an amount proportional to the movement of the heel clamp 58. A plate 128 carries switches 134, 136 having rollers 138, 140 which engage the cam 120. When the cam has been moved from a neutral position one of the switches 134, 136 is actuated and electric motor 142 rotates the plate 128 until the switches move back to their neutral position relative to the cam 120. The switches 134, 136 also control the electric motor 182 (Fig. 13) which moves the toe rest in the heel seat lasting machine. Thus the toe rest is automaticaly moved to its correct position according to the length of the shoe in the toe lasting machine 10.
