The position of the traverse length on a bobbin winding machine is cyclically displaced to prevent yarn build-up at the bobbin ends due to variations in traverse speed during changes of direction. A driven grooved cam 1 is followed by a follower 8 which is of elongated shape so that when the groove direction changes, the follower 8 and its spindle 8' are rotated. An arm 15 keyed to the spindle 8' are bears a pawl 19 which, when rotation of the spindle in one direction occurs, rotates a ratches wheel 11 against which is fixed an eccentric 10. The eccentric 10 is thus rotated anticlockwise (as viewed in Figs. 1 and 3) when the cam follower 8 is thus rotated. A block 12 surrounds the eccentric 10 and slides in a further blook 13 which carries an arm 28 having a thread guide. The action of the eccentric 10 thus superimposes a slow sinusoidal reciprocation of the thread guide upon the reciprocation produced by the traverse cam 1. The speed of rotation of the eccentric may be adjusted 'by changing the degree of engagement of the pawl 19 by means of a movable stop 22.
