Abstract

1,223,904. Winches; platform elevations. W. C. COOMBS. 27 March, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 17736/68. Headings B8B and B8H. A powered winch adapted to be mounted on a workman's staging for hoisting the same up a rope depending from a fixed structure, comprises two drums 4, 6 around which the rope is wrapped several times, and a pressure plate 20 which grips the last part lap of rope to tension the same prior to it passing freely from the winch. The pressure plate 20 is mounted on one end face of the drum 4 and is urged thereagainst by springs 21, the rope being gripped between the plate and the drum. The rope is guided on to each of the drums which include guide channels 16, 18. The drum 4 is driven through reduction gearing from an electric motor, the drum 6 being drive n from the drum 4 through an endless chain 24. The whole of the winch apart from the motor is mounted in a casing 2 which is divided by an oil seal and diaphragm into an oil free section through which the rope passes and a lubricated drive section.
