A folding stay for a flap window comprises two arms 1 and 2, pivotally connected to each other at 3 and to saddles 6 and 7 respectively mounted on the frame of a window pane and on a window frame, and is characterized in that coupling links 8 and 9 are provided between the saddles 6 and 7 and the ends of the arms 1 and 2, and are pivotally connected both to the saddles and to the arms, the arrangement being such that in the fully folded condition of the stay, the coupling link pivots afford an axis about which the folded arms can be pivoted, effectively as a single member, in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane in which the arms are extended or folded. As shown in Fig. 3, the coupling link 8 comprises a plate 8a pivoted at 12 to the arm 1 and having ears 8b which pivot at 10 on the saddle 6. The coupling link 9 comprises a plate 9a pivoted at 13 to the saddle 7 and having ears 9b which pivot at 11 on the arm 2. The pivot pins 12 and 13 are in alignment when the stay is in its fully folded condition and arm 2 is positioned between the flanges 1a and 1b of the arm 1. In this position, the stay can be swung laterally into the inoperative position (Fig. 2, not shown) because a flange 1a of the arm 1 terminates in front of the coupling link 8. The other flange 1b of the arm 1 extends beyond the coupling link 8 and acts as a stop, thus facilitating movement of the stay into the operative closed position ready for window opening.
