Abstract

1275228 Applying caps to containers SIGNODE CORP 28 Aug 1970 [5 Sept 1969] 41592/70 Heading B8C A mechanism for folding a flange 36 on a container 18 and a flange 38 on a closure cap 20 from the configuration shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 5 comprises, a first member 32 which engages a portion of the cap flange 38 extending beyond the container flange 36 and which is pivoted about a pin 48 from the Fig. 2 position to a position overlying a second member 34 so as to fold the cap flange 38 over the container flange 36, both the members 32, 34 then being pivoted as a unit about stub shafts 42 to the Fig. 5 position. Arms 40 depending from the second member 34 are pivoted to a support frame by the stubs shafts 42 and rotatably support a shaft 50 to which is secured a link 52 pivotally connected to a second link 54 in turn pivoted to an ear 46 on the first member 32, the ear 46 being pivotally connected to an ear 44 on the second member 34 by the pin 48. The two end-positions of the members 32, 34 are determined by a stop 68 carried by the link 52 abutting either one of two stops 66 carried by one arm 40. The members 32, 34 are pivoted by means of a cylinder 96 having a piston-rod 100 connected to the link 52 by a pin 106 so that retraction of the piston-rod 100 rotates the shaft 50 anticlockwise and causes the linkage 52, 54 to take-up the relative configuration shown in Fig. 5 with the first member 32 overlying the second member 34, movement of the second member 34 being prevented by a spring biased latch arm (72, Figs. 3, 4) which abuts lug 82 on the arm 40, a stop 92, carried by an arm 90 on the link 42, abutting the latch arm (72) and moving it away from the lug 82 on completion of the pivoting movement. Thus, further retraction of the piston-rod 100 cause the members 32, 34 to pivot about the shafts 42 as a unit. Simultaneously with this pivotal movement the container 18 and the cap 20 are lowered by a mechanism (not shown) to a position between spaced guides 110 (only one shown), and a strap 112 is applied around the cap 20 to secure it to the container 18. Alternatively, adhesive may be used.
