Abstract

Paper web 10 is printed upon by a rotary offset method, then is heated and rewound, and between heating and rewinding is passed over a cylinder, whose surface is wetted with water by a damping unit, in such a way that water is compressed between the cylinder surface and the web and caused to penetrate the web. The cylinder may be a water-cooled chill roller 6, by which the heated web 10 is cooled and may additionally or alternatively be any other cylin der around which web 10 is passed, such as cylinder 19 which feeds rewinding reel 20. The wetted cylinders may be damped by stacked rollers one of which is flapped and dips into a water trough and may be driven by a variable speed electric motor. The printed and treated web 10 may be printed on further, for example by letterpress and the initial offset printing may be in colour.
