Abstract
1,214,989. Exhaust gas silencers. QUINTON HAZELL (SILENCERS) Ltd. Oct.4, 1968 [Oct. 5, 1967], No.45417/67. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] An exhaust gas silencer for an internal combustion engine comprises a metal casing and metal inlet and outlet non-split tubular members through which exhaust gases enter and leave the casing, the casing comprising one or more socket members within which the tubular members are secured by an annular contraction or an annular enlargement of the socket member or members and the tubular member or members respectively. The silencer shown comprises a casing 10 formed by a side wall 18 and end walls 12, 14 or elliptical form secured thereto by flange connections 16. The casing is divided into chambers 28, 30, 32, 34 by means of intermediate walls 20, 22, 24 also secured to the side wall 18 by flange connections 26. An inlet tubular member or pipe 36 extends through the end wall 14 and intermediate walls 24, 22, 20 and opens into the chamber 34. The pipe 36 is formed with openings 44 which communicate with the chambers 28, 30, 32 and the pipe is secured to the end wall 14 and the intermediate walls 24, 22, 20 by socket connections 60. An outlet pipe 38 extends from the chamber 30 through the intermediate walls 22, 20 and the end wall 12 being secured to these walls by socket connections 60. The pipe is also formed with three rows of louvred openings 46, 48, 50 through which exhaust gases may pass from the chamber 32 into the pipe. A further tubular member 52 extends between the chambers 30 and 34 being secured to the intermediate walls 22, 20 by socket connections 60. The member 52 is formed with three rows of louvred openings 54, 56, 58 through which gases may pass from the member into the chamber 32. One form of connection 60 is shown in Fig. 2, the end wall being formed with a flanged socket 62 through which the tubular member 36 passes, the metal of the member 36 being then expanded to form annular ribs 64, 66 at each side of the flange resulting in a rigid, gas-tight joints. In Fig. 3 after the tubular member has been inserted within the socket flange 62, the flange is contracted so as to form an annular corrugation 68 on the tubular member, again resulting in a rigid gas-tight joint.
