Abstract

1361148 Exhaust silencers G B RIGHETTI 14 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33004/72 Heading F1B An I.C. engine exhaust silencer comprises an outer casing formed from sheet metal half shells 1, 2 and sheet metal internal elements 5, 6 all these parts being connected along flanges 3, 4, 7, 8 and forming expansion chambers D, E and annular passages A, C, connected by a straight passage B. The shells 1, 2, are formed as pans with one end deeper than the other and . so arranged that when connected together the base walls are substantially parallel to one another. Gases admitted to the silencer through conduit 16a enters annular passage A then pass via passage B to annular passage C which they leave by perforations 21, 25 to enter chamber D. After expanding in chamber D, the gases reach chamber E via apertures 28, 29 and openings 30 and subsequentially leave by opening 17. Some of the gases pass directly from the annular passage A to chamber D via openings 23. The external casing may be insulated, e.g. with asbestos, to reduce heat loss.
