Abstract
Improvements introduced into an intake and exhaust system in or for a piston internal combustion engine, of the type having an auxiliary combustion chamber that communicates with the main combustion chamber or with each main combustion chamber through a passage for calls; whose intake and exhaust system comprises intake means including a main intake chamber and at least one main intake passageway extending from said main intake chamber to supply a comparatively poor mixture of air and fuel to the main chamber or to each main combustion chamber of the engine, said intake means also including an auxiliary intake chamber and at least one auxiliary intake passage extending from said auxiliary intake chamber to supply a comparatively rich mixture of air and fuel to the auxiliary combustion chamber or to each auxiliary combustion chamber of the engine, exhaust means comprising a thin-walled metal liner wrapped by and spaced apart within a thick-walled outer shell, said liner including at least one exhaust passage for collecting exhaust gases from the main chamber or from each main combustion chamber, and having an exhaust chamber connected to said exhaust passage or passages, said exhaust means having an opening, and an ascending member forming a part of said intake means and associated with said opening for transferring heat from the exhaust gases to the intake mixes in the main intake chamber and in the auxiliary intake chamber, said ascending member having first and second portions, the first of which has an effective area of from 1/4 to 2/3 of the effective area of the second portion.
