Abstract

1374830 I C engine exhaust manifolds; purifying exhaust gases ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc 18 July 1972 [3 Dec 1971] 33482/72 Heading F1B A shell 25 carried within a shell 10, e.g. of cast or sheet metal, has inlet conduits 56 and an outlet conduit 40 projecting outwardly into inlet conduits 16 and an outlet conduit 20 on the shell 10. A shell 45 or a part-annular baffle member (45'), Figs.3 and 4 (not shown), carried within the shell 25 directs flow from the conduits 56 to pass adjacent the ends 35 of the shell 25 to the conduit 40. The shells 25, 45 and baffle member (45') are formed of sections 26 to 29, 46 to 49 and (46' to 49') in relatively slidable engagement to permit thermal expansion. The conduits 56, 40 are slidable in the conduits 16, 20 and the shell sections 26 to 29 are slidably supported on arcuate brackets 37 mounted on the shell 10. Compressible thermal insulation material 60 is provided between the shells 10 and 25. Air may be introduced with exhaust gases at the conduits 16. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1301377 and 1301378.
