Abstract
1361910 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gases; exhaust manifolds FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 June 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 28564/72 Heading F1B To provide a substantially greater average time rate of change of exhaust gas temperature below the catalyst activation temperature of a catalytic converter 24 than above the activation temperature, the manifolds 30, 32 and pipes conveying exhaust gas from the engine 10 to the converter inlet include or are associated with heat dissipating means. The catalyst is heated rapidly to the activation temperature and maintained at temperatures not substantially in excess thereof. The exhaust manifolds (12, 14), Fig. 1 (not shown), and connecting pipe (16) may be formed of finned or fluted sheet metal or as finned or fluted thinwalled castings. The manifolds 30, 32 may have a jacket 34 through which air or liquid, e.g. engine cooling water, is circulated by blowers 36, 38 or pumps which are operative when the catalyst activation temperature is sensed by a device 40. The device 40 may operate valves when the cooling water is circulated by the engine cooling water pump. An air cooling jacket (46), Fig. 3 (not shown) may have inlets directed towards the engine-driven fan (44) and containing valves (52, 54) operated in response to catalyst activation temperature.
