Abstract
1341854 I. C. engine exhaust gas afterburners TOYO KOGYO CO Ltd 13 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1700/71 Heading F1B An inner shell 3a, 3b defining an afterburning chamber 2 is surrounded by an outer shell 5a, 5b with an insulating space 4 therebetween which may be filled with insulating material. The inner shell is mounted for movement relative to the outer shell by pipes 8 and 13 and fixed thereto at one location by a plate 21 and bolt 22. The pipe 8 may be fixed to either of the shells and the pipes 13 may be fixed to the inner shell and mounted for movement parallel and normal to their axes relative to the outer shell or the inner shell may be slidable on the pipes which are mounted for movement normal to their axes relative to the outer shell, Fig. 3 (not shown). A pin 6 fixed to the inner shell is slidable in a bush 9 in the outer shell. A baffle 23 in the chamber 2 prevents direct gas flow between the pipes 8 and 13 and baffles may be provided at the inner ends of the pipes 20 which provide for gas inlet or outlet to or from the chamber. The plate 16 may be connected to the engine block or exhaust manifold and a number of different arrangements to provide a seal between the pipes 13 and the outer shell while allowing relative movement are described. The inner and outer shells may be formed of upper and lower parts welded at their junction.
