Abstract

1,206,214. Centrifugal separator. ALFA-LAVAL A.B. 2 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 20931/68. Heading B2P. A screw conveyor 2 for discharging sludge separated out of a liquid substance supplied to the rotor 1 of a centrifuge is supported at its ends by shafts 9, 12 which are detachably coupled to the conveyor and are journalled in the rotor. The rotor 1 is rotatably supported in bearings 6 and is connected by means of a hollow shaft 8 to a planetary gear 7 to which the screw conveyor 2 is connected by means of the solid shaft 9 so that it rotates at a speed slightly different from that of the rotor. The shaft 9 is journalled by means of a combined radial and axial bearing 10 in one end wall 11 of the rotor and by means of a radial bearing (not shown) outside the end wall 11 and is splined to the screw conveyor 2. The shaft 12, which is hollow, is journalled by means of a radial bearing 13 in the other end wall 14 of the rotor and by means of another bearing outside this end wall and is a friction fit within a bore 16 of the screw conveyor; alternatively, the shaft 12 is splined to the screw conveyor. Protection of the bearings 10, 13 is effected by seals 17, 19. The construction affords easy dismantling of the centrifuge for cleaning purposes without the bearings being exposed. The liquid substance to be clarified is fed through a pipe 3, the sludge being discharged at 4 and the clarified liquid at 5.
