In a centrifuge comprising a rotor 16 having a peripheral shell 20 extending between end walls 18, 22, the solids deposited on to the shell 20 are moved by means of a conveyer 34 along an inwardly tapering wall portion 20a of the shell towards a solids discharge port 30 adjacent one end wall of the shell, and a tension member 38, extending from the conveyer 34 externally of the rotor 16 through an end wall thereof adjacent the port 30, engages against a bearing surface located on the side of the end wall remote from the conveyer bearing the axial thrust exerted upon the conveyer by the movement of the solids towards the discharge port 30. As shown, the member 38 is threadedly secured to the conveyer 34 and has a shoulder 44 engaging a roller bearing 46 located between the shoulder 44 and a shoulder 42 formed inwardly of a drive pulley 46 secured to an extension of the end wall 22. Liquid-solids mixture is fed through a tube 52 supported by a bracket 56 against an accelerator plate 53 and through a port 54 in the conveyer body which carries a helical blade 36. The clarified liquid is discharged through a port 26 in a plate dam 28 secured to the end wall 18. The conveyer is splined to a shaft 48 driven at a different speed from the conveyer shaft passing through a supporting bearing 14 through gearing (not shown). In a modification, the bearing surface taking up the axial thrust upon the conveyer may be supported by the bracket 56. In a further modification, the tension member 38 may be replaced by a compression member extending from the conveyer through the end wall 18 to be supported by a bearing surface external of this end wall.
