Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1 and B2] In a separator for centrifuging slurry comprising a basket or bowl 2 secured to a shaft 1 driven by an electric motor 4 through one or more belts and a drive cylinder 5, a solids discharge screw has a shaft 11 which is driven at a speed different from, e.g. slightly higher than, that of the basket or bowl by means of the drive cylinder 5 through gearing consisting of an outer circular spline 6 secured to the cylinder 5 and having internal teeth adapted to mesh with external teeth on an inner flexible spline 7 which is connected to the screw shaft 11 by a connecting element 8. The flexible spline 7 is made of elastomeric material and is supported by rollers on a fixed elliptical cam 9 which constantly adjusts the spline 7 to an elliptical configuration for meshing with the circular spline 6. The separator may be horizontally or vertically arranged.
