Abstract

892,702. Centrifugal separators. SHARPLES CORPORATION. Nov. 26, 1959. [Nov. 28, 1958]. No. 40229/59. Class 23, A separator for separating solid from liquid comprises a rotor 32 rotatable as a unit with a gearbox 33 by a drive shaft 34, and a solid discharge screw conveyer 64 rotatable relative to the rotor by the gears in the gearbox. The rotor and gearbox are housed in a casing 20 which is in turn housed in a casing 11, the arrangement providing a vapour-tight chamber 26. The casing 11 is supported by brackets 17, and the casing 20 is supported at 27 and is a sliding fit at 28. The rotor, gearbox, drive shaft and drive pulley 35 are supported from the casing 11 by a mounting 25 which permits pivotal and lateral movement. An annular bumper 41 prevents excessive movement of the lower end of the rotor which is driven by a motor 142 adjustably mounted in the casing 11. In modifications the rotor is driven by gearing, or by a direct drive. A fixed shaft 37 carries a sun wheel 36 of the epicyclic gearing within the gearbox, the gearing driving the conveyer shaft 71 at a slightly slower speed than that of the rotor. Liquid to be separated is fed through a pipe 113 and U turn (not shown) to a pipe 117 which discharges into a chamber 118 having nozzles 119 discharging into the rotor separating space. Separated liquid flows over an annular dam 98 and is discharged from the rotor through backward facing nozzles 93 which are lined with abrasiveresistant material. Separated solids are discharged through ports 92. Auxiliary liquid may be supplied to the separating space through nozzles 125.
