Abstract
998,669. Centrifugal separators. STARCOSA G.m.b.H. June 18, 1964, No. 25281/64. Heading B2P. A two-stage centrifugal separator for treating liquid suspensions comprises a screw-type centrifuge and a plate-type centrifuge having a double-conical drum connected by flanges to the external drum of the screw centrifuge. See Fig. 1, the screw drum 6 extends into the double-conical drum 9, 10 and is mounted on a shaft extending through a hollow shaft integral with the end plate formed by the half cone 10. The half cone 9 has a flange 19 which is screwed on to a ring 8 which is connected to a flange on the external drum 1, 2 of the screw centrifuge and which acts as an overflow dam for liquid and fine solids separated in the screw centrifuge. In operation, the suspension is fed to the screw centrifuge at 4. The coarse solids are discharged from the separating chamber 7 by the screw 3 while the fine partides and liquid flow over the dam 8 into the drum 9, 10 and enter the spaces between the plates 16 via bores 20 in the plates and in a clamping cone 17. The fine solids settle on the plates and move to the outer periphery thereof to be discharged through nozzles 12 in the half cone 9. The clarified liquid flows towards the inner periphery of the plates and is discharged, via grooves 14 in the plate support 13, through bores 15 in the half cone 10. To clean the plates 16, the half cone 9 is unscrewed and slid over the cylindrical drum part 2 so as to expose the plates. Fig. 2 shows a separator for grading and cleaning starch milk in potato starch factories. The screw drum 23 stops short of the interior of the double-conical drum 25, 26 and is driven at a different speed from the drum 21, 22 through epicyclic gearing 34.
