A centrifuge for separating solids from liquids comprises a drum 19, Fig. 1, rotatably mounted within a housing 5, 6, 7 and having at least one ring-shaped sediment compartment containing a vaned separation member 50 in which are provided at least two stabilizing vanes 27, Fig. 4, for uniformly distributing the liquid in the member 50 and for preventing the rotational speed of the liquid from lagging behind that of the drum. The housing and a drive motor 4 are secured by screws 3 to a carrier ring 2 supported on uprights 1. The housing has inner and outer walls 6, 7, the wall 7 being provided with a tangential liquid outlet 9 and with a cover 10 secured by flaps 12 engaging beneath the lower end of wall 7. The drum 19 is secured to a sleeve 16 connected to the shaft 17 of motor 4. The vanes 27, which are provided with pressure stabilizing holes 28, are contained between end walls 25, 26 and are inserted within an inner ring 24. The vanes extend longitudinally parallel or at an angle to the drum axis and are rearwardly inclined as shown in Fig. 4. At their inner edges, portions of the vanes extend between the end wall 25 and a ring 29 which provide an inlet compartment communicating with a feed inlet pipe 13 containing a filter element 14 for removing coarse particles from the liquid. An outer ring 23 defines with the ring 24 and the drum 19 further sediment compartments 32, 34. In operation, the liquid passes through the pipe 13 and the inlet compartment and is rotated by the vanes 27 and the major portion of solids separate out in the member 50. The partially clarified liquid leaves the member 50 through a central opening in the wall 26 and passes successively through the compartments 32 and 34 where the finer and finest solid particles are separated and the clarified liquid is discharged through the outlet 9. Cleaning may be effected by releasing the drum cover 20 and removing the rings 23, 24 from the drum. In a modification, the drum is provided with a single compartment having an upwardly diverging inner wall surface, the clarified liquid leaving the separation member 50 passing between the covers 10 and 20 and between the walls 6 and 7 to the outlet 9.
