Abstract
1,059,355. Centrifugal separators. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 39141/63. Heading B2P. In a centrifuge for separating solids suspended in a liquid and comprising a rotatable drum 2 coaxial with, and relatively rotatable with, a rotatable screw conveyor 3 for the removal of separated solids from the drum, a device 4-6 for introducing the suspension in the annular space 7 between the drum and the screw conveyor hub 3a an outlet 11 in one end of the drum for the discharge of separated solids 9 and a liquid removal device 13 discharging clarified liquid 10 at the other end of the drum a number of narrow passages 12, 12a, 12b parallel or approximately parallel to the drum axis connect the annular space 7 to the liquid removal device 13 and heave such cross-sectional dimensions, that a relatively high flow velocity is built up in the passages which prevents any solid particles still contained in the clarified liquid from being deposited in these passages. The inlet for the suspension comprises a stationary pipe 4 mounted in the hollow drum shaft and communicating with the annular space 7 through radial passages 6 provided with impeller blades 5. In Fig. 1, the liquid removal device consists of passages 13 in one end of the drum and the passages 12 extend parallel to the shaft axis through the screw conveyor hub. In Fig. 2, liquid removal devices 13, each consisting of one or more skimming pipes 15 in a cylindrical chamber 13a, are provided in the drum and in the screw conveyor hub and communicate through passages 12a, 12b at different levels with the annular space 7 so that clarified liquid of two different degrees of purity can be obtained at the same time. The pipes 15 discharge into stationary pipes 16 extending through the drum hollow shaft. In another embodiment, the clarified liquid is removed through two liquid removal devices in the screw-conveyor hub communicating with passages longitudinally extending through the hub and opening in the annular space 7 at different levels. The clarified liquid may also be removed through a combination of the arrangements referred to above.
