Abstract

1,101,802. Centrifugal strainer. WESTERN STATES MACHINE CO. 20 Oct., 1965 [30 Oct., 1964], No. 44436/65. Heading BID. In a centrifugal strainer in which material for filtering is delivered by a pipe 41 to the lower end of a rotating frusto-conical filter basket 12 and solids are discharged over the upper end of the basket, the separated liquids thrown centrifugally from the basket are divided into two by means of a surrounding cylindrical wall 49, and wall 49 comprises an upper section 53, vertically telescopable about lower fixed section 52, whereby the relative proportions of the regions of basket 12 from which the two liquids are obtained may be varied. In centrifuging mossecuite, for example, it is arranged that green syrup is collected in compartment 50, inside wall 49, while wash syrup, produced by the action of wash water from spray 47 on residual crystals in the upper part of the basket, is collected in outer compartment 51. Upper section 53 comprises concentric shells 54, 55 joined by an upper ring 56 to define an annular space in which lower section 52 is received. Upper section 53 is vertically moved by three levers 64 spaced around the outer casing 18 of the strainer, which co-operate with scales and may be locked (Figs. 5, 6, not shown), and which turn shafts 59 bearing pulleys 58 round which are wrapped cables 61 attaohed at vertically spaced locations to section 53 (Figs. ,7, 8, not shown). Shafts 59 project inwards along three inverted V-shaped tunnels (70) (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) which carry the belt drive for basket 12 and the outlet conduits (73), (74) from compartments 50, 51. Solids spilling over the upper edge 30 of basket 12 fall through chamber 31 between tunnels (70) and are directed to a central discharge below the strainer by deflectors 72.
