Abstract

1397863 Centrifugal separators NEDERLANDSE GASUNIE NV 27 Feb 1973 [4 March 1972] 9587/73 Heading B2P A separator for removing solids and/or liquids from a gaseous stream comrpises a cylindrical vessel 1; a feed conduit 2; a discharge conduit 7 for the cleaned stream extending axially into the interior of the vessel; means, e.g. helical blades 4, for imparting a rotary motion to the gaseous stream within the vessel; a circular baffle 10 within the vessel beneath the conduit 7 with its outer rim lying in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the vessel; and a second baffle 11, Fig 2, or 12, Fig 4, having an external diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the vessel and positioned under the baffle 10 at a distance of at least #th of the distance between the plane of the outer rim of the baffle 10 and the conduit 7, the diameter of the outer rim of the baffle 10 being from 0.5 to 0.95 times the internal diameter of the vessel and from 1.5 to 3 times the internal diameter of the conduit 7 and the plane of the outer rim of the baffle 10 being at a distance of 1.0 to 3 times the internal diameter of the conduit 7 from the underside of that conduit. In Fig 2, the baffle 10 is a circular flat plate and the baffle 11 is an annular plate having an inner diameter of at least 0.5 times that of the baffle 10 with its outerrim not more than 25 mm from the inner wall of the vessel. In Fig 4, the baffle 10 is in the form of a cone which may be truncated, whose apex angle is at least 90‹ and whose highest point is at least 0.7 times the internal diameter of the conduit 7, from the underside of the conduit. The baffle 12 is a circular plate under which are mounted one or more radially-disposed baffles 13 which may extend into the bowl-shaped part of the bottom of the vessel. In a modification of Fig 4, the baffle 10 is a circular flat plate. With this arangement of baffles the separated solid and/or liquid is/are substantially at rest at the botom of the vessel whereby their discharge is facilitated and abrasive wear of the vessel wall avoided. The feed conduit 2 is perpendicular to the vessel axes. A guide plate is provided at 3 along which the gaseous stream flows. The discharge conduit 7 may, above the plate 3, extend laterally through the peripheral wall of the vessel. A protective jacket 9 is provided around the conduit 7 to prevent a liquid film from forming on the outer surface of the conduit and eventually being entrained therethrough with the cleaned gaseous stream.
