Abstract

1425482 Vortex separators SIEMENS AG 19 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 19195/73 Heading B2P A helical-flow vortex separator for classifying fine-grained particles according to size comprises a generally cylindrical vortex chamber 1, an inlet 2 at one end of the chamber for introducing particle-laden gas into the chamber, the cross-sectional area of the inlet being not greater than half that of the chamber, a gas/ particle outlet 12 at the other end of the chamber, a .particle outlet 9 surrounding the inlet 2, and a number of auxiliary gas inlets 5 arranged to direct auxiliary gas into the chamber generally tangentially with respect to the wall of the chamber obliquely opposite to the general axial inflow of particle-laden gas, the longitudinal axes of all the auxiliary gas inlets intersecting the chamber wall in a single transverse plane of the chamber and the gas/particle inlet and/or the gas particle outlet being mounted so as to be axially displaceable relatively to the chamber. The particle-laden gas introduced through the inlet tube 2 is rotated by vanes 4 mounted in the inlet tube and/or by the helical peripheral flow of auxiliary gas provided by the inlets 5. The larger particles are cenitrifugally hurled outwardly above the mouth 3 of the tube 2 and are discharged via the annular outlet gap 9, provided between a diaphragm 8 and the wall of the chamber, into a bin 10 having an outlet 11. The smaller particles are removed, with the upward rotational flow of gas through the outlet tube 12. Axial adjustment of the tube 2 and/or tube 12 serves to vary the grain sizes of the particles discharged through the gap 9 and the tube 12. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) a number of coaxial outlet tubes, which may be axially adjustable, are provided at the upper end of the vortex chamber for the discharge of particles of different sizes contained in the upward rotational flow.
