Abstract
1,014,268. Centrifugal separators. POLYSIUS, G.m.b.H. Nov. 17, 1964 [Dec. 5, 1963], No. 46698/64. Heading B2P. An apparatus for separating solid particles from a gas comprises a particle-collecting container 1, Fig. 1, having at its lower end a funnel into which the separated particles move down under the force of gravity and provided with a spiral or helical tube 2 which acts as a gas guide and which, on its side facing the container wall, has apertures 3 for the exit of solid particles which are separated out of the gas under centrifugal force. The particle-laden gas enters at 4 and the substantially clean gas leaves at 5. The tube may have a rectangular or semicircular cross-section and the apertures 3 may be vertical, oblique or arrow-shaped. The tube is shown with a helix of constant diameter and with a constant cross-section. In another embodiment, the cross-section of the tube reduces from the inlet to the outlet. In Fig. 4, in addition to the reduction of cross-section from the outlet 4b to the outlet 5b, the tube is in the form of a spiral with decreasing diameter from the inlet to the outlet. The apparatus may be used as a lifter for separating solids of different grain sizes in which case the solids are passed by an air stream through the tube, so that grains above a certain size are separated; the size of the grains separated may be modified by the use of secondary air which changes the flow speed of the solidsladen air-stream.
