Abstract

1,272,387. Cyclone separators. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP. 8 July, 1970 [9 July, 1969], No. 33231/70. Heading B2P. An apparatus for separating a suspension of solid particles into at least two fractions of different densities comprises one or more cyclones C 1 -C 4 , Figs. 1 and 2, secured for rotation with a rotary housing 4 A-C and communicating via its inlet with the housing interior 4, 5 to which the suspension is fed. Feeding of the suspension takes place through a conduit 7 and a hollow belt-driven shaft 1 connected to the housing. The cyclones are surrounded by a spiral trough 8 formed with two channels 8A, 8B for respectively collecting the heavier and the lighter of the separated fractions which are discharged from the cyclones respectively through their apical underflow outlets and through siphons S 1 -S 4 connected to their overflow outlets. Fins 4B which secure together the parts 4A and 4B of the housing serve to provide a radial and angular acceleration to the incoming suspension before its passage through the cyclones. Each cyclone and its siphon may be provided at their radially outer ends with nozzles such as t a and t b oriented in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation F of the housing so that as the heavier and lighter fractions are discharged from the cyclones they produce a reactional force on the cyclones and on their siphons that helps to drive the housing in the direction F. The housing may be fed through a flexible tube instead of through the hollow shaft 1. In a modification Fig. 5, the rotary housing E, is connected to cyclones k 1 , k 2 and k 3 arranged in series and having separate over flow syphons S 1 , S 2 and S 3 . In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the cyclones are connected in series via their overflow syphons and have separate underflow outlets.
