Abstract
1,205,458. Fused electrolyte cells. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. May 20, 1968, [May 19, 1967], No.23979/68. Heading C7B. A fused electrolyte cell, e.g. a Downs type cell for alkali metal production from fused halides such as NaCl, has a vertically positioned graphite anode 1 having a well 3 tapered from top to bottom extending through its centre in the upper part 2 opposite the electrolysis zone defined by a surrounding e.g. cylindrical metal cathode 6, the well communicating with the electrolysis zone through perforations e.g. four vertical slots 4 in the anode wall 2 for electrolyte circulation. As shown, the well is preferably a truncated cone. An annular foraminous e.g. steel wire screen diaphragm 7 is preferably positioned in the electrolysis zone.
