Abstract
1,168,715. Cathode assemblies for electrolytic cells. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. May 11, 1967 [May 16, 1966(2)], No.21888/67. Heading C7B. A cathode assembly for an electrolytic cell includes a lead-in bus-bar 22, a bus-bar strip 24, an enclosure having sidewalls 14 and a plurality of internally reinforced foraminous screen fingers 28 which extend substantially across the interior of the walled enclosure, the reinforcing means 26 being in electrical contact with the screen fingers 36 and being attached to at least that sidewall of the enclosure on the exterior of which is attached the bus-bar strip 24, the bus-bar strip having substantially the same height as the reinforcing means at the point of attachment thereof to the enclosure wall. The cathode assembly may be incorporated in a cell comprising a cell top 12 and cell bottom 16 in which are assembled anode blades 30 embedded in lead or other conductive material, the anode blades extending between adjacent pairs of cathode fingers 28. The foraminous screen material 36 may be of steel screen mesh and may form a sleeve about the reinforcing means 26 which may be formed by a corrugated ferrous plate, but metals such as titanium, nickel, chromium, copper, iron, tantalum or low-carbon, nickel or chromium steels may be used in construction of the cathode. The bus-bar strip 24 may comprise a plurality of vertical copper strips, the spaces there between being filled with welding material. The cell may be used as a chlor-alkali diaphragm cell, a diaphragm being formed to cover the foraminous portion of the cathode, e. g. the diaphragm may be of asbestos deposited in situ on the outer surfaces of the cathode. Diaphragms formed of synthetic organic materials, e. g. woven chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polypropylene or (Registered Trade Mark) "Teflon". The cell may be used in the electrolysis of sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium, cesium and hydrogen chlorides, and, using a recirculation method, the production of alkali metal chlorates.
