Abstract

1,200,215. Mixing and emulsifying apparatus. R. COURBATON. 6 Nov., 1967 [4 Nov., 1966], .No. 50286/67. (Heading B1C. [Also in Division F2] Mixing and emulsifying plant. An installation, Fif. 1, for preparing an emulsion of hydrocarbon oil and water for supply to a burner comprises a mixer 9 supplied with oil and water through regulating valves 5,6, the mixture being pumped to an emulsifier 14 by pump 12 through conduits 13, 13a. Surplus mixture from the pump and emulsion from the emulsifier are recycled to mixer 9 through conduits 10, 16 respectively. Mixing apparatus. The recycled emulsion and mixture are supplied respectively to inlets 71, 72, Fig. 3, at opposite ends of the mixer and pass inwards through venturis 59, 60 to a mixing chamber within a ring 57 having orifices 58 leading to an outlet 40. Oil and water from regulating valves 5, 6 are supplied to the annular cavities 37, 38 each having a ring of inclined orifices 67, 68 which direct jets of oil or water towards the inlet ends of the venturis. The mixer has an air venting valve 49. Emulsifying apparatus. Mixture enters through passages 92, 91, Fig. 5, and is formed by the annular passage 89 into a cylindrical stream which is projected against the edge 96 of a cylindrical blade 95, setting up waves in the liquid. The emulsion so formed passes through passages 97, 98 into chamber 78 where pressure on the slidable valve body 101 compresses spring 106 and causes the valve body to separate from the body 93 at the cooperating frusto-conical surfaces 102. Part of the emulsion then opens and passes the valve 104 for supply to a burner (not depicted), while the remainder is discharged from chamber 78 at 100 to conduit 16 for recycling to the mixer. In another arrangement of emulsifier (Fig. 6, not shown) mixture from a plurality of radial jets (124) is directed against the inner edge (128) of an annular blade (127) mounted in an elastic ring (126), generating ultrasonic vibrations in the emulsion so formed.
