Abstract

[Also in Divisions D1-D2] Textured yarn is collected by winding with an overfeed (and consequent relaxation) the rate of which is greater during a first phase of winding than during the second phase. The first rate may decrease and the second rate may be constant. Thus, in the wound package, the yarn in the innermost layers is more relaxed than the yarn in the remaining outer layers, so that the yarn is receptive of treatment by heat and/or moisture to modify the stretch/bulk properties with uniform results. As shown, yarn Y passes through a traverse guide 50 and is overfed to, and wound on, a tube 48 rotated by a drive roll 40. The drive is effected, for perhaps the first several hundred yards of yarn wound, through a ring 54 integral with or secured, as by a screw 56, to the winding mandrel 44 or the tube 48 seated thereon, and thereafter conventionally by dried contact between roll 40 and the peripheral surface of the package.
