Abstract
1,002,570. Sizing and winding filaments. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. June 18, 1962 [June 20, 1961], No.23368/62. Headings D1J and D1L. A filament, e.g. a synthetic filament drawn from a bobbin 1 is passed through a guide 2, through a thread brake 3 and over a guide pin 4 to be sized by a smooth or grooved roller 6 rotating in a bath 5 of the sizing agent: the filament is then guided by rollers 7, 8, 9 through air for 6 to 17 feet to allow the size to dry at least partially and is then wound up on a cheese 15 in such a way that the traversing guide 10 and its supporting frame 17 do not contact the filament on the cheese. As shown the traversing guide frame carries a light 11 and a photo-electric cell 12 such that as the cheese grows to interrupt the light beam an electric motor 13 is acutated to shift the frame via a worm gear and hold the guide 10 out of contact with the cheese. In a further form the frame carrying the traversing guide is shifted by a cam which is rotated in accordance with the number of revolutions performed by the cheese, the cam shape depending upon the thickness of the filament being wound. Alternately the cheese may be moved away from the traversing guide. The size in tray 5 is fed from a storage tank and is preferably recycled and filtered.
