Abstract

1,190,741. Hydrofoil craft. SOUTHERN HYDROFOILS Ltd. 22 May, 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 7920/66. Headings B7A and B7M. A hydrofoil craft of the submerged foil type has a pivotally mounted port foil 5, a pivotally mounted starboard foil 7, a port predictor arm 9 and a starboard predictor arm 11 each pivotally mounted with respect to the hull 1 of the craft and interconnected with its associated side foil, and a control system 26 to 40 such that the pivotal movement of the predictor arm 9 relative to the other predictor arm 11 which causes movement of the foil 12 associated with predictor arm 9 in the same sense as the movement of predictor arm 9 also causes movement of the foil 7 associated with the other predictor arm 11 in the opposite sense. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the control system is hydraulic. In Fig. 3 (not shown), an electrical control system produces the same result. In each case if a lateral wave causes foil 5 to climb, the control system causes foil 7 to dive thus improving lateral stability.
