Abstract

1,187,165. Centrifugal pumps. BORGWARNER CORP. March 27, 1968 [April 14, 1967], No.14680/68. Heading F1C. A variable capacity centrifugal pump has an impeller formed in two relatively movable sections 42, 45. The impeller vanes 61 are carried by movable section 45, and have inclined peripheral edges 69 so that the effective diameter of the impeller as well as the flow area therethrough can be varied by axial movement of the section 45. The rearword edges 67 of the vanes are received in grooves or slots 62 in the section 42. The section 45 is moved axially by introducing pressure fluid through a bore 58 into a chamber 80 wherein it acts on the exposed end of the impeller shaft 48 and a nut 53 screwed thereon. The vanes 61 may be planer or curved, and have peripheral edges of convex or concave form instead of linear form as shown. Instead of the vane-receiving grooves or slots 62, the section 42 may be provided with a number of vane masking fins on its front face 63, the vanes 61 then being received in the spaces between the fins. Moreover, the peripheral edges of the vanes and of the fins are inclined in opposite directions.
