Abstract

1,172,996. Centrifugal and axial-flow pumps. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 25, 1967 [May 27, 1966], No.23870/66. Addition to 1,153,993. Heading F1C. The invention described in Specification 1, 153, 993 is modified by providing a controlled return flow of pumped liquid through lines 5,6 to inlet duct 1 to reduce the net positive suction pressure and thereby obtain substantially constant delivery pressure at constant pump speed. The return flow is controlled by a valve member 9 biased to its minimum flow position by a spring 10 adjustable by screw 12. The return flow is directed into the inlet duct against the main flow to reduce the net positive suction pressure, through one or more nozzles 15 carried by a ring-shaped pipe 14. Alternatively or additionally, the return flow may be directed with an upstream component of motion through an annular opening at a number of circumferentially spaced openings in the wall of the inlet duct. When introduced through the annular opening the return flow also reduces the effective flow area through the inlet duct.
