In a pumping system for controlling the water level in a well 2, the quantity of water discharged by a screw pump 4 is reduced by delivering air through one or more pipes 9, 10 to the pump inlet duct 8. The pipes 9, 10 may be welded or soldered to the duct 8. Air is delivered to the duct when a falling water level uncovers the end 12 of the pipe 10 and later the end 11 of the pipe 9. The pipes 9, 10 may be associated with an external centrifugal pump having an inlet duct passing horizontally through the side of the well. A number of pumps each associated with an air entry pipe may be connected in parallel.
