Abstract
1,058,523. Centrifugal pumps. D. RACHMAN. Dec.23, 1965 [Jan.12, 1965], No.1306/65. Heading F1C. The discharge 6 of a centrifugal pump is connected to the delivery pipe 7 via a chamber 5 from which liquid is returned to the pump via a passage 9. The returned liquid issues from nozzles 8 as jets which impinge on the front shroud 4 of the impeller 2. The jets are spun off the rotating shroud as a sheet which entrains any air present and removes it to the pump volute 6A. Since air in the inlet passage 11 tends to bypass the impeller 2 and flow towards the zone of low pressure created by the nozzles 8, the arrangement removes air from the inlet passage and thereby primes the pump. The nozzles 8 may be so proportioned and located that their priming effect is a secondary feature and the main feature is an increase in pump performance which is stated to be afforded by the nozzles. Several passages 9 may be provided, connected to nozzles 8 located on both sides of the impeller.
