Abstract

1456020 Centrifugal pumps LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Nov 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 56203/72 Heading F1C A centrifugal pump comprises a casing 10, 11 having an inlet 12 and an outlet 13, and an impeller comprising vanes 19 inter-connecting a centre body 16 and a shroud 18, the vanes being formed with slots 19d permitting flow from one side of each vane to the opposite side, and each vane is reversely curved at its inner end 19b towards the direction of impeller rotation so as to reduce shock and the resultant tendency to cavitation. Each slot 19d is nearer the impeller axis at the high-pressure side of the vane 19 than at the low-pressure side to provide a centrifugal pressure gradient which opposes flow along the slot due to the pressure difference caused by "bluff body" effects until the pressure difference exceeds the pressure gradient. The flow ensures that the pressure behind each vane does not become so low that the liquid boils. Shorter vanes 20 are provided between the vanes 19. Still shorter vanes may be provided between the vanes 19, 20.
