A tanning plant comprises a rotatably driven horizontal drum with means for discharging tanning solution through a hollow axle journal which is connected to a controllable pressure source, said means being shielded from skins inside the drum by a perforated screen. A rotable horizontal tanning drum 1 has stub axles 2 and 3 journalled in supporting standards 4, at least stub axle 2 being tubular. An outlet opening 12, through which liquor can be discharged, is located in one end wall close to the peripheral wall of the drum. The opening 12 can be closed or opened by a sliding gate (not shown), which is connected to and actuated by a piston in a pneumatic cylinder 11, whose two ends, respectively, are connected by flexible hose pipes 8b and 9b to the inner ends of passages 7a and 7b through a non-rotatable coupling member 6 passing through the tubular stub axle 2. The outer end of the passages 7a and 7b, are connected through pipes 8a and 9a, respectively, and through a valve 13, to a pipe 14 supplying compressed air. The valve 13 may be operated automatically, e.g. magnetically, by a punched card device or a timeswitch, and may have a venting outlet 15. The outlet 12 and hose pipes 8b 9b are shielded from contact with skins in the drum by a perforated screen 16. In carrying out tanning, the opening 12 is closed by the gate, and skins and tanning liquor are fed into the drum, through an opening 5 in its peripheral wall, which opening 5 is then closed, and steady rotation of the drum commences. When the skins have been tanned sufficiently, rotation of the drum is stopped when the outlet opening 12 is substantially in the lowermost position, the valve 13 operates to open the gate, and tanning liquor is discharged through the opening 12, assisted, if desired, by the pressure of compressed air fed into the drum through stub axle 3.
